Study on Control and Epidemiologic Characteristics of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella

Abstract

|
|
Purpose : The purpose of present study is to adopt the method of epidemiologic investigation and of prevention against the epidemic of measles, mumps, and rubella throughout the MMR vaccine immunization and to consider the measles elimination strategy in relation to the outbreak in Korea, 2000.
Methods :The measles and mumps epidemic-trend study was based on data received by the public health center, which is composed of case-by-case content of sheet of epidemiologic investigation. The MMR vaccination rate was surveyed in one class of one grade of elementary, junior, and high schools that were selected randomly by sampling process from administrative district of health center nationwide. The method of epidemiologic investigation and of prevention against the epidemic of measles, mumps, and rubella throughout the MMR vaccine immunization was reviewed and referred to the consultative committee.
Results : The incidence of measles is 32,088 cases and mumps is 3,052 cases. The incidence of measles Per 100,000 inhabitants is 67.9 cases, and per age of 10 years is 473.3 cases which is the most higher. In 17.3% of total cases is less than the age of 1 year and 67.6% is the age group of elementary and junior schools. The incidence of mumps per 100,000 inhabitants is 6.5 cases, and the age group of elementary and junior schools is 75.0%. The rate of 1st MMR vaccination of measles cases is 24.3% in age of 1 year, and 88.9~91.1% in age of 7~15 years. The rate of 2nd MMR vaccination of measles cases is 19.4% in age of 7~9 years. The rate of 1st MMR vaccination of mumps cases is 20.0% in age of 1 year, and 81.6~82.8% in age of 7~15 years. The rate of 2nd MMR vaccination of measles cases is 12.8% in age of 7~9 years. In questionnaire, The rate of 1st MMR vaccination of elementary and junior schools is 86.2% and 80.2%, respectively. The rate of 2nd MMR vaccination of elementary school is 37.7%. The retention rate of vaccination record is 26.9%. The 1st vaccination rates of the vaccination record holder and presenter are 90.1% and 92.9%, respectively and the 2nd vaccination rates are 38.7% and 39.1%. It was supposed to consider the plan of the catch-up programme for the prevention and elimination of measles outbreak, which is based on measles sero-survey nationwide. And guide line of epidemiological investigation and control of measles, mumps and rubella was developed.
Conclusions : It was suggested that the strategy of supplementary immunization is needed, which is based on measles sero-survey nationwide to define the group of target age. In addition to the consideration of method of epidemiologic investigation for measles case, present study made the foundation of measles prevention and elimination in Korea
